Short answerA legal entity identifier (LEI) is a unique code that identifies a legal entity, such as a fund or its manager. The ESMA register of ELTIFs includes the LEI of each fund.

A legal entity identifier (LEI) is a unique alphanumeric code that identifies a legal entity, such as a fund or a fund manager, in financial transactions and regulatory reporting.

Why it matters

The central public register of ELTIFs kept by ESMA includes, among other details, the LEI of each fund and information about its manager. With the LEI, you can check that a fund offered to you appears in the register as an ELTIF and see who manages it.

What to watch for

Make sure the name, LEI and manager in the offer documents match the entries in the official register. A mismatch or a missing entry is a reason to stop and ask questions. The LEI confirms identity only, not quality or risk. See how to verify a provider and ELTIF.
