KID is the abbreviation for key information document. It is a short, standardised document that retail investors should receive before buying a packaged investment product.

What it contains

The KID describes what the product is, who it is intended for, a summary risk indicator, the recommended holding period, the costs and performance scenarios. Its fixed layout makes different products easier to compare.

Why it matters

The KID is the quickest route to the basic facts of a product. It has limits. Scenarios are illustrative, the risk indicator is simplified, and redemption rules are given in more detail in the prospectus and statute. Read it fully, and ask the seller for it if it is not provided.
