AIFM is the abbreviation for alternative investment fund manager. It is the firm responsible for managing an alternative investment fund, and an ELTIF must be managed by an authorised one.
What it does
The manager sets and carries out the investment strategy, selects and monitors assets, manages risk and liquidity, and arranges valuation. It works alongside a depositary, which holds the assets and oversees certain manager duties.
Why it matters
Fund results depend heavily on the manager. Before investing, confirm that the manager is authorised by a national supervisor and that the fund and manager appear in the ESMA register of ELTIFs. Authorisation shows that regulatory requirements are met. It does not show that the manager will deliver good results.
